Until recently, the Greenland file was not strongly present in European public debate. However, U.S. President Donald Trump's statements brought the island back to the forefront of attention, when he reconsidered its future within a broader security-strategic approach. This proposal, along with explicit hints at using economic tools as a means of pressure, quickly moved the issue from closed diplomatic rooms to the public sphere, turning it into a subject of wide political and popular discussion in Northern Europe and within the European Union.
